    言葉だけできたって、単にふつうのこととしてネイティヴスピーカー社会の下層に入れるだけだ。
    　なまじネイティヴみたいなのはかえってよくないこともある。私がアメリカの高校生だったころ、忘れられない助言をアメリカ人の美術教師にもらった。
    「あなたは日本語のアクセントをなくしてはだめよ。でないと、あなたの特徴がなくなる。アメリカ人はあなたが英語を話すのも当然に思ってしまうからね」
    　なまじ発音がネイティヴ並みというのは、何かミスコミュニケーションをしたとき、それが言葉の技術的なことかもしれない、と考えてもらえないということである。
    　この価値が、今の私にはよくわかる。いまだに、これより有効な異文化アドヴァイスを私は知らない。当時はわからなかった。ご多分にもれず私もアメリカ人になりたかったのだ。二十年も経ってわかる最良のアドヴァイスというのもある。こういうのを人が生きる希望というのではないだろうか。
